In addition to her work as an artist, Liz also runs Obelon Arts, which produces theatre shows and organises arts projects. She is also a member of the Contemporary Glass Society.

I enjoy working in glass because of its versatility: transparency, opacity, colour, two or three dimensionality, capacity to ‘hold’ or reflect light. It offers an artist many metaphors due to its fragility, strength, sharpness and associations. I am inspired by fragments of stories often discovered in books, toys, archival film footage, photographs which I have inherited.

Liz Waugh McManus will be at the ARTWORKS exhibition from 10am – 4pm.

Two new exhibitions: Eleonora Knowland and Liz Waugh McManus

Two Artworks artists, Eleonora Knowland and Liz Waugh McManus, have solo exhibitions opening next weekend. Interestingly, both exhibitions feature colour and light as a means to express ideas about memory, time and a sense of place. Eleonora Knowland is a painter concerned with landscape and Liz Waugh McManus is a multi-media artist who works with glass and projected film.

Eleonora Knowland originally developed painting on curved canvases as a way of expressing the undulating surface of the East Anglian landscape, but they have now become an intricate part of her artwork. A recent trip to Australia has inspired a new collection of paintings. The colours in these canvases speak of a hotter climate, stronger, and bolder, with an intensity of light.

John Glover : painting portraits in the Artworks exhibition

New to the Artworks group in 2102, the portrait painter John Glover has been paintings portraits in the current Artworks exhibition at Blackthorpe Barn, as part of our daily demonstrations programme.

The models for John’s two days in the gallery were also artists, two artists from Artworks, Valerie Armstrong and Liz Waugh-McManus.

Here is Valerie Armstrong sitting for her portrait, with John Glover at the easel.

Here is the finished portrait, which Valerie was very pleased with. Word has it that the sitters get to keep the painting.

On John’s second day of painting demonstrations in the Artworks exhibition, the sitter was artist Liz Waugh-McManus – and here is the result.

Read more about John Glover and his career as a professional portrait artist on our blog, John Glover : a new artist to Artworks

Visit John Glover’s website for more information on commissioning a portrait or attending one of his art tuition classes.

A different Artworks artist sets up a temporary studio space in the Artworks exhibition each day. The artist is in residence from 10.30am to 4.30pm. You can drop in at any time during the day to watch the artist at work or ask questions about media and techniques as there is no structured timetable to the day.

Welcome back to the Artworks shop!

A few words from Gillian Crossley-Holland, a founder member of Artworks, who oversees and organises the Artworks shop each year. Please note: This text refers to the Artworks exhibition & shop in 2012:
It is our thirteenth exhibition and I think this is one of our best shows ever. The main barn looks very striking with the three dimensional work displayed on tall plinths which flow back the length of the barn – including Carol Pask’s bold ceramic works, Lizzie Saunder’s intriguing geometric shapes, Genista Dunham’s large and exciting papier mache bowls, the beautiful glass work of Virginia Wright, not forgetting Jenny Goater’s successful wire sculptures (also a founder member of Artworks). There is, of course, all the wonderful paintings on the walls, in every 2D media, from traditional oils to mixed media collage and acrylics.
Our Private View evening was great, with lots of familiar faces but also a number of new people visiting, a real buzz, and many sales of artwork, large and small. Meanwhile, it was back to Blackthorpe barn very early the next morning to meet the Shop Team and set up the Artworks shop & cafe.
Having finished getting the shop ready with the walls, tables and browsers filled up with artists work, I always feel I should have a little treat to celebrate – something lovely from the main exhibition or the Artworks shop, even if it’s just a few artists cards.
Papier mache bowls by Jazz Green
Last year it was a papier mache bowl by Jazz Green, tender and golden, and a wonderful print by Ben Quail.
This year it was another papier mache bowl (I have a collection) by Genista Dunham – it is so merry and colourful.

The shop is now beautifully set up and running alongside the main Artworks exhibition, and as always, there is a wonderful range of artworks and cards to browse and buy.
Cards by Valerie Armstrong (left) and Penny Bhadresa (right), Carol Pask ceramics (centre)

I love looking round my home and seeing various artworks I have bought and remembering their makers and all the wonderful artists I’ve worked alongside these last thirteen years with Artworks.
