Gillian is a founder member of Artworks and each year also exhibits with Suffolk Open Studios and Norfolk Arts. Gillian Crossley-Holland writes: As an artist, I like the physical edges that form on the surface of my paintings, the unexpected marks that happen between one plane and another. It’s one of the reasons I like working with oil pastels, they are such a versatile medium and allow me to play and make marks instantly.

Five artists go to a deserted farmhouse: Suffolk Open Studios art exhibition

Longs Farm, an enchanting medieval farmhouse currently standing empty in rural Suffolk, provides an inspiring and unique setting for the artwork of five distinctive artists, who are all participating in Suffolk Open Studios in June 2014.

Wire Sculpture of a Cockerel by Jenny Goater

Christine McKechnie and Gillian Crossley-Holland, both founder members of Artworks will be joining ex-member Jenny Goater, with fellow artists Jane West and Nicolette Hallett, to fill the entire farmhouse with the best of their art as a precursor to opening their art studios to the public in June.  The exhibition will contain a selection of drawings, paintings, collage and sculpture.
Painting by Nicolette Hallett
Christine McKechnie will have on show her popular, intricately crafted, watercolour-painted cut paper collages. These are personal memories of places evoked in colour. They could be of her garden outside her art studio, on which she spends much time and love, a tree down the green lane analysed on her daily walk, or visits to the Suffolk coast. There are also collages of loved places further afield – Glyndebourne in Sussex, Seatoller in the Lake District, the Arsenale in Venice, Thailand, Cambodia, and Hong Kong.

Gillian Crossley-Holland will be displaying her distinctive and evocative paintings of the Lopham Fens and the North Norfolk coast. These are paintings that explore her love of crossing places and edges, places where the earth is little more than a reflection of the sky, or places where the sea meets the shore, forever shifting back and forth and never permanent.

Also on show will be some of Gillian’s recent still life drawings of spring flowers; pots of primroses, jugs of wallflowers and vases of tulips all worked swiftly in bright colours and vivid marks.  These drawings provide a strong visual contrast to her landscapes and seascapes but the subject matter still explores her fascination with the fragility of permanence.

A quick gallery visit to the ARTWORKS shop, take a browse!

Here at the Artworks blog we thought we would share a few pictures of our Artworks shop at Blackthorpe Barn (further details of the main Artworks exhibition are below).

Sculptural ceramics by Kate Reynolds

The Artworks shop is always popular with visitors, offering up small delights & serendipitous finds, often artwork direct from the studios of Artworks artists and not previously exhibited.

Elaine Nason cards, work by Genista Dunham & Mac MaCaughan

The Artworks shop stocks small paintings, unframed prints and drawings, collage, sculptural artworks including ceramics, metalwork, glass and papier maché, together with a wonderful variety of handmade artist cards, greetings cards and artist postcards.

Most artists have prints, paintings or drawings in these browsers

Read more about setting up and managing the Artworks shop from Gillian Crossley-Holland, a founder artist member of Artworks.

Glass by Liz Waugh-McManus, cards by Christine McKechnie

Most Artworks artists exhibiting in the main Artworks exhibition also have a small selection of their work in the Artworks shop. Artists who are taking a sabbatical year out also contribute artwork to the Artworks shop.

You will find all styles and genres of art on display, from abstract to figurative, with all work in the shop available to be purchased and taken away on the same day of purchase. It is rather like an organised artist’s open studio set-up, comprised of many artists work on display. We accept cash and debit card payments on all purchases.

Together with the Artworks Café, the Artworks shop provides a most relaxing & informal atmosphere to browse all things art, from postcards (all at 50p!) to original paintings, handcrafted prints and small affordable sculptures.

The Artworks exhibition is open daily 10am to 5pm, from 7th – 29th September 2013. You can read more about all the Artworks artists here (or see the left sidebar for direct links to individual artists).

Ten Artworks artists in Ad Libitum Art Exhibition

More exhibition news on the Artworks blog!

Ten Artworks artists (past & present) have paintings currently on show at the stunning venue, The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds this November. The exhibition is called Ad Libitum, in reference to artists having a ‘free hand’ in their work.

All the work in the exhibition is new to Artworks, having not been exhibited in any previous Artworks exhibitions. The light & space of the upstairs gallery is a wonderful backdrop to everyone’s work – we hope you will visit if you are in the area!

The nine Artworks artists featured in this show are: Mike Ashley, Gillian Crossley-Holland, Helen Dougall, Helen Du Feu, Janet French, Jazz Green, Eleonora Knowland, Marianne Koby-Johnson, Katie Millard and Gabrielle Stoddart.

Some exhibition photographs will be posted shortly. The exhibition, Ad Libitum, runs from 29th October to 28th November 2012 (full details below).

Welcome back to the Artworks shop!

A few words from Gillian Crossley-Holland, a founder member of Artworks, who oversees and organises the Artworks shop each year. Please note: This text refers to the Artworks exhibition & shop in 2012:
It is our thirteenth exhibition and I think this is one of our best shows ever. The main barn looks very striking with the three dimensional work displayed on tall plinths which flow back the length of the barn – including Carol Pask’s bold ceramic works, Lizzie Saunder’s intriguing geometric shapes, Genista Dunham’s large and exciting papier mache bowls, the beautiful glass work of Virginia Wright, not forgetting Jenny Goater’s successful wire sculptures (also a founder member of Artworks). There is, of course, all the wonderful paintings on the walls, in every 2D media, from traditional oils to mixed media collage and acrylics.
Our Private View evening was great, with lots of familiar faces but also a number of new people visiting, a real buzz, and many sales of artwork, large and small. Meanwhile, it was back to Blackthorpe barn very early the next morning to meet the Shop Team and set up the Artworks shop & cafe.
Having finished getting the shop ready with the walls, tables and browsers filled up with artists work, I always feel I should have a little treat to celebrate – something lovely from the main exhibition or the Artworks shop, even if it’s just a few artists cards.
Papier mache bowls by Jazz Green
Last year it was a papier mache bowl by Jazz Green, tender and golden, and a wonderful print by Ben Quail.
This year it was another papier mache bowl (I have a collection) by Genista Dunham – it is so merry and colourful.

The shop is now beautifully set up and running alongside the main Artworks exhibition, and as always, there is a wonderful range of artworks and cards to browse and buy.
Cards by Valerie Armstrong (left) and Penny Bhadresa (right), Carol Pask ceramics (centre)

I love looking round my home and seeing various artworks I have bought and remembering their makers and all the wonderful artists I’ve worked alongside these last thirteen years with Artworks.
