This year I have begun working on a series which I loosely call “journeys”. I am looking at those paths we take, or could have taken in our lives. Curiosity, which propels us to launch forwards into the unknown and discover the unexpected. Dreams and stories still play themselves out in my paintings. Creatively I see myself as both a builder and an archeologist: I build my paintings in layers of transparent glazes and textures, then rub back into the layers to find the ghostly shadows which lurk below the surface. My work evolves organically and mysteriously, even to myself. Symbolic images appear as if by magic. Music is the muse, which transports the mind to the more abstract and subconscious place where time stands still.

After graduating from Croydon College of Art, Valerie spent a year in Sweden working in the design studios of a ceramic factory. Following this, she moved to Paris for four years to paint, and to work for a publishing House specializing in facsimiles of William Blake.
In 1976, having gained a post graduate qualification as an art therapist, Valerie began twelve years working in psychiatric hospitals and therapeutic centres as an art therapist. After moving to Suffolk with two small children, Valerie set up her own business making painted folding screens to commission.
In recent years, a fascination for experimental printmaking, collage, and layered mixed media has taken her in a new direction, to a more experimental and abstract way of working.
