Increasingly aware of the challenge of hanging watercolours against the background offered by the barn, I feel tempted this year to produce work in a more vibrant palette! If so, it will be a contrast to my current project reflecting the quiet of my local Suffolk landscape, of which these recent pieces are an example. Maybe in these contemplative works I’m finding peace to hold against the turmoil our world seems always to be presenting. Perhaps I should be bold and switch to reflecting the violence and turbulence!

The course Ruth’s life has taken seems mostly unplanned. Poetry, music and sport were school favourites, but Botany and Zoology somehow became the focus for her undergraduate studies. A PGCE and a few years teaching Biology to reluctant students caring for wayward mice and fruit flies in 6th form genetics, provided a few more years of distraction, until eventually counselling became her focus.
Meandering and uncertainty then proved assets during a career of nearly 30 years as a psychotherapist, following and assisting in the paths others took in their lives.
Mark-making began upon moving from London to Suffolk, while undertaking massive “works’ on living room walls during the era of paint effects! With the help of two mentors she has for nearly 20 years continued to follow the lines, shapes and colours of the natural world, and most of all to express a sense of gratitude and wonder for its resilience and beauty.
